Interview: "It Was A Match Made In Heaven" - Ghostbusters: Special Edition ROM Hacker On Giving The Sega Mega Drive / Genesis Title A Better Afterlife

Time Extension

"It is still wild to think that we made all of this together across different continents". If you've been reading Time Extension for a while, you've probably seen us cover some of BillyTime!Games' ROM hacks before. Over the last decade, the self-described "retro gaming mad scientist" has lent his hacking skills to a number of fascinating projects: everything from providing optional ways to play some of your favourite (and least favourite) classic games to even creating an offline recreation of Sega Channel (Sega, TCI, and Time Warner's discontinued cable video game service). Japan-Only Famicom Adventure Ripple Island Brings Fairy Tale Whimsy To The Console Archives

Time Extension

Already available elsewhere in English. The Console Archives is an excellent idea, and no doubt Hamster deserves its success for consistent vintage releases, week-on-week, year-on-year. But sometimes you have to wonder what's going on with the decision-makers - given the increasingly unappealing releases. Submitted for your approval: Sunsoft's picture-book adventure title Ripple Island, first released for the Famicom in 1988. This icon-driven adventure sees a brave young adventurer, Kyle, embark on a quest to rescue the proverbial beautiful Princess Nasarell from a foreboding castle, where she is held by the tyrant Emperor Groaker. Tyger, Tyger, Bleeding Bright. Team17 has lifted the lid on a retro-infused roguelike which will offer up both highly challenging platformer gameplay and bucketfuls of (surprisingly unnerving) gore. Little Prince Tyger, currently in development at French studio Saltitude Games, is expected to launch on PC in 2027. Inspired by William Blake's 1794 poem "The Tyger", Little Prince Tyger tells the grim tale of a royal hunter - tasked by the Queen to locate her lost son, Prince Galaad - picking their way through a frightening dark fantasy environment, populated by nightmarish creatures and even scarier memories. Poll: Have You Ever Imported A Video Game?

Time Extension

It's an import-ant question. Social media is, for me, an utterly fascinating tool because it not only brings like-minded people together to share their passion for certain topics, but also exposes you to individuals who, for one reason or another, seem to have lived a very different reality from your own. The topic I found myself embroiled in this week was importing video games, something that has been a huge part of my own experience with interactive entertainment. Times Square Decked Out With 'Life-Size Street Fighter Arcade' To Promote Upcoming Movie

Time Extension

Ryu and crew hit the big screen October 16. We are one week away from the release of the energetic, highly stylised, and somewhat dubious-looking movie Street Fighter, adapted from Capcom's legendary fighting game franchise. To promote the film's October 16 release, producers Paramount and Legendary outfitted New York's Times Square with a life-size "Street Fighter Arcade", complete with its own World Warriors. In video captured by entertained/bewildered onlookers, we can see two performers - portraying SF poster boys Ryu and Ken - throwing down "on-screen", surrounded by an enormous cabinet mockup complete with a giant-sized control panel. Imagine the bill from Sanwa on that one. The Times Square cabinet only supports two buttons, as opposed to Street Fighter's six - so good luck pianoing your Hundred Hand Slap. Review: Evercade Nexus - a Commendable Upgrade, but Bundling Banjo-Kazooie Is the True Masterstroke

Time Extension

Evercade's next evolution is here. While the Evercade family has seen several hardware revisions and evolutions over the years – including a bartop arcade unit, a home console, and even a scaled-down Super Pocket sibling – the Evercade Nexus feels like the most significant step forward the brand has taken since its inception six years ago. And it's easy to see why: the introduction of dual analogue sticks opens up a whole world of possibilities, not just within the existing Evercade catalogue (many games already support such an interface thanks to the fact that you can plug in third-party pads on the Evercade VS) but also in the future. There's a wealth of 'Dual Shock'-enabled PS1 games which could potentially be licensed for the platform, for example. Read the full article on timeextension.com

Feature: "It's Insulting & Hurtful" - Beetle Adventure Racing Decomp Dev Kicks Back Against The Rise Of AI Recomps

Time Extension

"Any ethical hacker would recognise, 'Oh, this is some guy's project'". One of the most exciting developments in the retro gaming scene over the last few years is the rise of recompilation projects, offering players a new way to experience some of their favourite games on modern PC platforms. However, as the number of AI recompilations of classic games grows daily, many in the gaming community have been pushing back against this controversial technology and the promotion of projects that rely heavily on GenAI code, arguing that it is "hurting the scene". Dariosamo, for instance, one of the developers of Banjo Kazooie Recompiled (an unofficial PC port of Banjo Kazooie), recently took to social media to criticise the YouTuber VideoGameEsoterica for featuring news about an AI recomp of Banjo Tooie on his YouTube channel. 1992's Ultra Gory PC-98 Horror Title Dead Of The Brain Is (Be)Heading To Steam

Time Extension

Rave from the Grave. The '90s horror output of controversial Japanese developer FairyTale is headed to PC, translated into English (officially) for the very first time. Published by FAKKU, the first release in FairyTale's "Nightmare Collection" will be the PC-98 title Dead Of The Brain, which gooed up the Japanese market back in 1992. Dead of the Brain: Day of the Living Dead spearheaded FairyTale's forced genre shift from erotic games (or "Eroge") to horror titles. DOOM On Vectrex Brings An Eerie Vector Beauty To The Legendary DOS Shooter

Time Extension

Grab your plastic overlays. Milton Bradley's tabletop all-in-one console, Vectrex, can now be inked in as another platform that can "run" seminal 1993 release DOOM. New footage surfaced yesterday that showed the granddaddy of the shooter genre "running" on the long-obsolete vector-based system. Even given the Vectrex display's rudimentary visuals, id Software's legendary FPS title is instantly recognisable, with its sci-fi futurist depiction of Hell on Earth beautifully transformed into smooth vector visuals. Vectrex DOOM is at once delightful and creepy, and depicts a future of gaming that might've happened, had the vector stylings of titles such as Tempest (1981), Star Wars (1983), and Battlezone (1980) become an industry norm. "I Know That Was a Half-Baked Take" - Street Fighter II Artist Is Still Annoyed He Didn't Do the Cover Art for the West

Time Extension

"In North America, Japanese art styles like that just won't be accepted". Given the insane global popularity of Japanese animation and pop culture today, it's hard to believe that, once upon a time, Western marketers did everything they could to hide the fact that something came from The Land of the Rising Sun. There's no better example of this than video games; in the '80s and early '90s, it was common to see Japanese games localised in North America and Europe with new box artwork, penned by regional artists in an attempt to cater for the (supposed) needs of players in that part of the world. RetroAchievements Come To Original Hardware Thanks To This PS2 Software Plug-In

Time Extension

xeRAbora brings RetroAchievements to modded hardware for the first time. New homebrew software allows for RetroAchievements to be tracked and recorded from games played on original PS2 hardware, rather than through an emulator. Developed by modder "hacan 359", the xeRAbora program works in collaboration with another homebrew utility, Open PS2 Loader, to track player progress on natively played PS2 games. As noted by RetroDodo, xeRAbora, downloadable right here, plugs into the Open PS2 Loader program and essentially tracks your PS2 gameplay from your PC as you play, reading the console's memory and watching for flags that denote achievements being hit. The player's Retro Achievement account is then notified and updated accordingly. It also works in line with standard PS2 emulation, for those who prefer the One Box method. Game Changer: Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge - Where My Love For Konami's Legendary Series Began

Time Extension

You've got to start somewhere. A couple of years ago, I penned a feature for this very site which explored the idea that playing video games – like any other formative memory – can be linked to physical locations. For example, you might fondly remember a certain town because it's where you bought a favourite game; that's happened to me many times in my life. In the case of Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge, this memory is even more potent because the game also represented my first exposure to a series which is now my all-time favourite in the pantheon of interactive entertainment. The Master System's Popularity In The UK Is Still Surprising Some People

Time Extension

Sega's 8-bit system outsold some pretty big names in the United Kingdom. In North America and Japan, the Sega Master System is little more than a footnote. Those two significant markets were dominated by the NES / Famicom, with Nintendo effectively locking out competition via some rather nefarious business practices – and its own library of genre-defining first-party releases, of course. Over in the United Kingdom, however, it was a very different story. Home computers like the ZX Spectrum, C64, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, and Commodore Amiga were the main way to play games for most of the 1980s, and Nintendo didn't put much effort into distributing the NES in the region. Instead, it seemed quite happy to allow Sega – via its distribution partner, Virgin – to steal a march. Read the full article on timeextension.com

Review: Grant Sinclair's GamerCard – Shares Some Of Sir Clive's DNA, But This Is No ZX Spectrum-Style Triumph

Time Extension

Thin as a deck of cards, but more like the Joker than the Ace. I’m not going to bury the lede in this review. Playing games on the GamerCard (£149) is mostly a miserable experience. That’s a pity, because for quite a few old farts, the Sinclair name remains synonymous with gaming. Fortunately, they’ve in recent years been blessed with ambitious, successful projects like the ZX Next that have pulled the Sinclair legacy into the present. The GamerCard? Well, it’s at least ambitious. Read the full article on timeextension.com

The Gaelco Sports Collection Featuring The Scandalous 'Squash' Launches October 22

Conduct Warning. QUByte Interactive has announced the Galeco Sports Collection , a compendium of five arcade titles from the former arcade developer's coin-op catalogue. As the name suggests, all five games feature a different variation of sportsball, including vehicular sportsball. The first two titles are perhaps Gaelco's best-remembered arcades: World Rally Championship (1993) and its sequel, World Rally 2 (1995). These ruthless isometric racers pit players' reactions against blistering, high-speed racing action and brutally unforgiving time limits. In the arcade scene, the World Rally games gobbled up many a credit, with map recognition a key element of success. Taito's Nonsense Platformer Chack'n Pop Stretches Its Legs On The Console Archives

Time Extension

Long Fellow. How's the weather up there? Hamster's Console Archives develops a head for heights this week, adding the Famicom port of Taito's bizarrely titled (and even more bizarrely executed) platformer, Chack'n Pop . Chack'n Pop arrived in arcades in 1984 and was ported to a variety of Japanese platforms, including the MSX, FM-7, and NEC line, not to mention consoles Famicom and SG-1000. Taito's early platform is a mixed bag of ideas, as though the developer knew they were making "A Game", and were putting the pieces together, hoping it would eventually take form and then tell them how to play it. Players guide the titular "Chack'n", a yellow... guy with extendable legs, through a series of mazes, dodging hazards and attempting to free caged hearts (yeah, why not?) scattered within each maze. Doing so unleashes an army of (suspiciously familiar) monsters, who Chack'n must dodge on their way to the exit at the top of the screen. Read the full article on timeextension.com

This Super Mario 64 SNES Port Is Looking To Push The Super FX Chip To Its Limits

Time Extension

Textures? in this economy? In the mid-'90s, with the Nintendo 64 looming, Nintendo was still looking for exciting new titles that would placate its enormous army of SNES owners. Donkey Kong Country , Killer Instinct , and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island are all examples of games that squeezed every last drop of juice out of the 16-bit platform, with savvy coders pushing the console to its limits. Today, some 30 years after the fact, these limits are still being explored as inquisitive homebrewers look to expand upon the known capabilities of these humble platforms of yore. Case in point: modder Game of Tobi , who is currently attempting a minor miracle in porting the N64 launch title Super Mario 64 to the Super Nintendo. Read the full article on timeextension.com

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Fanmade Master System Project Still Alive, With A Demo Potentially On The Way

Time Extension

Can I get a "Shell Yeah"? If you were an arcade-going youngster at the start of the '90s, chances are you will have put more than a few coins into Konami's superb Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coin-op. One of the most popular arcade cabinets of the period, this side-scrolling fighter continues to attract fans, even today – hence the recent popularity of both the TNMT Cowabunga Collection and the 'spiritual successor', Shredder's Revenge . The original arcade machine only got ported to the NES and home computers back in the day, with Turtles in Time and The Hyperstone Heist scratching the Turtles itch for SNES and Genesis / Mega Drive owners, respectively. Poor old Master System owners didn't get any Turtles love whatsoever – but that's all set to change, many decades on from the release of Konami's classic. Read the full article on timeextension.com

Using the Atari Jaguar hardware as its base, Homebrewer Clint Thomson has constructed an OS that envisions the Atari Painter - an unreleased home computer scheduled to launch in the mid-'90s. The Atari Painter was pitched as a CD-based home computer that would serve as a possible successor to Atari's ST and Falcon line. The original design concept , sketched out in the early '90s by Richard Miller's R&D team, would marry the Falcon's home computer design and architecture with the Atari Jaguar's contemporary RISC circuitry. Debuting in the original Fallout in 1997, the blonde-haired, jumpsuit-wearing character has become the series's de facto mascot as it has grown to include sequels, spin-offs, and TV shows, and has also inevitably appeared across mountains of merchandise: from bobbleheads to lunchboxes, board games, and pretty much anything else Bethesda has released since it acquired the franchise almost 20 years ago. Crystal Dynamics, in association with distributor PLAION, has announced a physical release for Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered , bringing the classic grimdark adventures to store shelves on PS5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch this November. Released digitally to PC and consoles back in March of this year, Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is an enhanced edition of the original 2003 release, available on PS2 and Xbox. Defiance is the fifth and final entry in the Legacy of Kain timeline , and it thrusts the titular antihero back into the past as he attempts to correct the course of history and save the increasingly desolate realm of Nosgoth. "I Feel Very Fortunate" - Castlevania's Kinuyo Yamashita Celebrates 40 Years Of The Vampire-Slaying Classic

In another fang-tastic interview from Dongled. Given its legacy in gaming, you'd be forgiven for thinking we know pretty much all there is to know about the Making Of the original NES Castlevania (known as Akumajō Dracula in Japan) by now. However, due to some fairly shoddy crediting and the general elusiveness of Konami staff from the period ( trust me, I've tried to contact pretty much everyone I could for Wireframe several years back! ), there are still some pretty large holes in our knowledge of its development, with much of the information we have learned about the game coming from secondhand accounts from those who didn't even work on the title. "I had to fight within the organization to keep the franchise as long as possible". It's fair to say that Sonic has had his ups and downs over the decades. That the character has starred in some legendary games isn't up for debate , but he's also had his low points – so much so that Sega was apparently even considering retiring the franchise at one point. That's what current Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka claims, at least. You and what army? Koei Tecmo, in collaboration with developer Omega Force, are prepping the battlefield for the upcoming release Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered . To whet bloodthirsty appetites, the re-envisioned edition of the PS2 warmonger will be receiving a demo on Thursday, September 24. A fan-favourite entry in the seemingly endless franchise, Dynasty Warriors 3 originally launched in 2001, utilising the PS2's power to bring its war of attrition screaming into the new millennium. Built on an entirely new engine, Dynasty Warriors 3 allowed for more frenetic fights, two-player co-op and improved visual fidelity over its predecessor, Dynasty Warriors 2 - itself a very early release in the PS2's lifetime. All of this was almost undone entirely thanks to the game's notoriously comical English dub. Read the full article on timeextension.com

New Compilation Celebrates Matthew 'Jet Set Willy' Smith's Indelible ZX Spectrum Legacy

(And the legacy of gaming's weirdest box art). For video game fans of a certain age, Matthew Smith needs no introduction. The British-born bedroom programmer tore up the early days of the ZX Spectrum with a series of wild, compelling, and somewhat anarchic titles, games which were emboldened with working-class spirit and emblazoned with some of the weirdest, most abstract box art in the medium's history. Receiving the rarely-seen TRS-80 computer as a gift in 1979, Smith took to programming as a prodigy, coding and releasing commercial games for the TRS-80 and the VIC-20 within just a few years. Noticing this burgeoning talent, Smith was afforded a ZX Spectrum by publisher Bug-Byte Software, who contracted the 17-year-old to produce three titles for the platform. You could argue that it's always been that way, right back to the late '70s and early 1980s, when the first examples – such as 1979's Superman (Atari 2600) and 1982's Spider-Man (Atari 2600, Odyssey 2) – appeared on the market. Originally released in 1996 for the Sony PlayStation (and later Sega Saturn and Windows PCs), Koei's Air Management '96 definitely belongs to the latter camp, being less about pulse-raising action and more about savvy business planning, clever budgeting, and the satisfaction of a job well done. Fan Project Makes Kid Kirby, The Cancelled SNES Game From Grand Theft Auto Devs, A Reality

Time Extension

Look at the little lad fly... A homebrew developer has released an unofficial, pint-sized recreation of a '90s Kirby game that never was. Available now on NovaStar's itch.io , Kid Kirby is an imagining of the superstar's unrealised SNES adventure, which was cancelled way back in 1995. Kid Kirby was originally conceived as a key title for the Super NES Mouse peripheral, launched by Nintendo in 1992 as part of its Super Mario Paint package. The concept would see a younger version of the adorable pink puffball questing to save the Dream Spring of Dream Land, encountering various familiar locations and characters along the way - including a junior King Dedede. Time Extension

'It's an extremely difficult matter, but I'll try to find a compromise'. Back in 2020, shmup specialists M2 gathered together the titles from its long-running Aleste series and released them on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch as the succinctly titled Aleste Collection. As a special treat, M2 included a brand-new Aleste title, GG Aleste 3 , coded for Sega's handheld platform Game Gear. While no standalone or physical edition of GG Aleste 3 ever materialised, fans were able to play it directly on Game Gear hardware via the use of a ripped ROM . Clown Around in Mr. Do's Castle, Headed To Hamster's Arcade Archives This Week

Time Extension

0% Crystals 0% Crashers 100% Clowns. One of my personal favourite gaming heroes makes their grand return this week, as Universal's madcap platformer Mr. Do!'s Castle welcomes guests, new and old, to Hamster's Arcade Archives . Released to arcades in 1983, emblazoned with one of the most punctuated titles of all time, Mr. Do!'s Castle is the first sequel to Universal's original Mr. Do! , which hit the coin-op scene just a year earlier. Whereas our Clown Prince's first escapade was more of a "dig 'n' crush" affair, Mr. Do!'s Castle is a single-screen platformer - in the vein of similar titles such as Kangaroo (1982) and BurgerTime (1982). "Terrible Marketing Hid A Great Show" - First Reviews Of Paramount's Golden Axe TV Series Are In

Time Extension

"An entertaining and frequently funny series". Mike McMahan ( Star Trek: Lower Decks ) has tackled Sega's arcade hack-and-slash Golden Axe in TV form, and it's fair to say that the initial trailer for the series divided fans. While many could appreciate the humorous tone and deep knowledge of the lore, others took issue with the stylised characters and lack of reverence for the series, which started all the way back in 1989 and is perhaps most famous for its Sega Genesis / Mega Drive port and sequels. System 3 CEO Says Antstream Misled Him Over Use Of GenAI In James Pond Legacy

Time Extension

"If they’ve used any generative AI at all, it should have been clear in that statement". The James Pond Legacy saga rumbles on. Not long ago, we revealed that the company behind the game's GenAI-infused trailer (and its core development) was Antstream , and now System 3 boss Mark Cale has told GameSpot that the studio misled him. Cale explains that System 3's initial assertion that no GenAI assets were present in the game was based on assurances from Antstream. "That was the statement that we were given at the time by Antstream,” says Cale. "We weren’t involved in the process. They supplied all of the artwork and they supplied, in the process, the illustration. All of that was given to us." Read the full article on timeextension.com

Of Crocs & Catwomen. This week sees British developer Argonaut Games celebrating its 44th birthday . For the past four decades, the studio has built one of the most varied and unique portfolios in gaming history, ranging from bedroom-programmed releases and handheld adventures to major film licences and some of Nintendo's biggest franchises. Originally formed in 1982 by then-teenager Jez San , Argonaut Software (as it was known) cut its teeth with 3D space blasters Starglider (1986) and Starglider 2 (1988) for the Atari ST and Amiga platforms.
