"He Used To Call Me 'Boss'" - Director Of Robin Williams' Iconic Zelda Ads Remembers The Famous Actor & Comedian, 15 Years Later

Time Extension

"I remember him as I knew him: a remarkably talented, generous and funny man". Speaking exclusively to Time Extension, Julien Seri, the director of the famous The Legend of Zelda ad campaign featuring Robin Williams and his daughter, Zelda, has shared his memories of what it was like working with the legendary comedian. Since the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was announced for Nintendo Switch 2, like many, I've found myself occasionally drifting back to the series of marketing ads for the 2011 3DS remake . New Sonic Animated Series And Crazy Taxi Movie In Production At Netflix

Time Extension

A totally outrageous paradigm. Netflix has revealed three Sega gaming adaptations currently in production for its streaming service. The media giant's projects include a new Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon and live-action adaptations of the arcade smash hit Crazy Taxi and RGG Studio's upcoming adventure title Stranger Than Heaven . As reported by Variety , the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon is skewing a little younger than previous animated adventures, with an "upper pre-school" audience in mind. In perhaps one of the cheesiest, corporate-cool statements heard in some time, Netflix promises a show that will be a "high-voltage, comedic, yet emotionally grounded series built for kids who want to feel a little edge, a little attitude, and a lot of ‘that’s my crew’ wish fulfilment". Thanks, Lindsey Naegle. Read the full article on timeextension.com

Mega Man Teams Up With Pragmata Star Diana In Perhaps The Cutest Art You'll See Today

Time Extension

Capcom not beating the crossover allegations. Capcom lit up Monday morning with delightful artwork that sees the studio's past crossover with its future. The adorable daubings show Super Fighting Robot Mega Man teaming up with Super Hacking Robot Diana, the star of this year's smash hit Pragmata . The new artwork was released to promote an upcoming range of trinkets on the Capcom store, featuring the two blue battlers in a variety of action poses. The crossover itself references an ongoing joke where, during Pragmata's ( very) lengthy development, conspiracies circulated that it was actually a secret Mega Man game, given Pragmata's high-tech, futuristic setting and its co-protagonist Diana - an android sporting a jacket with bulbous, arm-cannon-like sleeves and a distinctly familiar shade of blue. A Second English Translation For Sega CD Shadowrun Appears, And It's Also AI-Assisted

Time Extension

Update: "I just want us all to enjoy these translations". It's gonna be a wiz day, Drekheads. Some three decades on from its original release, the Sega CD port of cyberpunk RPG Shadowrun has finally received a long long -awaited English translation , courtesy of homebrewer Erebus, better known in the shadows of the Megacorps as "MadMorigan." MadMorigan's new translation sees the 1996 adventure localised in English for the very first time, restoring a lost piece of Shadowrun lore to the universe's global canon. Developed by Compile, the Sega CD edition sports a sharp anime aesthetic that sets it apart from the acclaimed SNES and Sega Genesis releases - both of which feature a darker, more Americanised tech-noir tone. "If A Computer Does All The Hard Work, What's The Point?" - Dev Behind Sega Emulator BlastEm Blasts "AI Slop" Projects

Time Extension

"BlastEm today is made up of 100% artisanal AI-free code". The arrival of GenAI coding tools has sparked an explosion of AI-assisted projects in the retro gaming space, including decomps, recomps , translations , and more. While the tools can drastically speed up development, there are questions surrounding the accuracy of such projects when compared to hand-made alternatives – and Michael Pavone, the dev behind the Sega-focused BlastEm emulator, has made it very clear where he stands on this topic (thanks, Read Only Memo ). The Making Of: Strider II - One Of The Worst Sequels In Video Game History, And I Should Know - I Had To Test It

Time Extension

Former Sega Champ and Tiertex tester Dan Curley tells all. The year is 1991, and I remember it like it was 35 years ago. Strider II (or Journey From Darkness: Strider Returns, if you prefer) was the first and almost last game I ever worked on in my video game development career. As a 16-year-old not long out of school and starting as a games tester at Manchester’s Tiertex development house, I was also just months into my reign as the European Sega Champion . November 1991 is exactly when my game development career commenced, in the lovely posh South Manchester suburb of Didsbury. I was wide-eyed and full of joy, the first step on a career rung that would make me the next Shigeru Miyamoto... what a deluded, naive dreamer. Read the full article on timeextension.com

Former Nintendo Power Artist Explains The Reason Behind His Mysterious Star Fox 64 & Star Fox 64 3D Credits

Time Extension

"I thought a lot about the varied, detailed internal construction of those things". As you may have already seen, Time Extension recently had the rare opportunity to speak with Benimaru Itoh , a figure who, among other things, created the original Star Fox comic adaptation , published in Nintendo Power Magazine in 1993. As part of this conversation, we wanted to find out as much as we could about the creation of the comic, asking Itoh about his influences, his introduction of Fox's love interest Fara, and why he gave Andross his own tragic backstory, as well as some of the original aspects he introduced that are not present in the original game's lore. Evercade Banjo-Kazooie Cart Will Include Unreleased Game Mode Bottles' Revenge

Time Extension

Lotta Bottle. Evercade's upcoming Banjo-Kazooie Double-Pack cartridge not only contains both of Rare's infamously meaty N64 platformers, but also a fistful of features cut or modified from the games' original release. Spotted by Crazy Burger at the recent Evercade Nexus event, this includes a mode that never made it off the Banjo-Tooie cutting room floor. Titled "Bottles' Revenge", the unreleased mode allows a second player to take control of some of Banjo-Tooie 's enemies, outmanoeuvring, attacking, and generally being a nuisance to our platform-hopping heroes. Interview: "If You Like What You're Doing, That Energy Comes Across To Readers" - Sonic The Comic's Lew Stringer On Badniks, Brutus, & Writing For Kids

Time Extension

"I’ve always written stories that I imagined I would have enjoyed at that age". In the past, I've made no secret of my love for Fleetway Edition's Sonic the Comic , the official Sonic comic that ran for nine years in the UK from 1993 to 2002. As you may already know, earlier this year, I put together a fairly lengthy article celebrating the legacy of the beloved UK comic, even getting to chat to two of the key creative figures, writer/artist Nigel Kitching and the illustrator Richard Elson. In that piece, I dove into how the editor Richard Burton was tasked with assembling a new comic based on the Sega mascot, discussed some of the more memorable story arcs, and covered its eventual downfall after the decision was made to cut back on original strips in favour of reprints. But one thing I regretted at the time was being unable to reach out to Lew Stringer, another one of my favourite writers who contributed to its pages. Read the full article on timeextension.com

"He Was Giddy" - Even Lord British Has Succumbed To The Allure Of GenAI

Time Extension

"He was more concerned with the end result than the journey". Richard Garriott holds a unique place in the world of role-playing video games. Through his astoundingly influential Ultima series, he introduced countless people to gameplay that not only granted incredible player agency but also carried considerable moral weight in-game. It's a shame, then, that the esteemed game designer (and astronaut – and I don't mean that in a pejorative manner; he's actually been into space) appears to have cast his ethical framework aside to suckle on the wizened teat of Generative AI. The Making Of: Nintendo Power's Star Fox Comic That Gave Andross A Tragic Backstory - "Miyamoto Requested That I Develop The Story Freely"

Time Extension

Benimaru Itoh on expanding the world of Star Fox. Growing up in the UK, I don't necessarily have the same fuzzy memories of Nintendo Power that a lot of my North American friends do, having grown up on our own official Nintendo magazines (which originated way back in 1992 with EMAP's Nintendo Magazine System). As a kid, I probably had a vague idea of what Nintendo Power was, based on occasional references in the British games press at the time. However, it wasn't until much later, with the rise of the early video game YouTubers, that I came to understand its impact on American players and began seeking out copies myself to see what I'd missed out on, living on the other side of the Atlantic. Only then did I begin to discover some of the incredible artwork and stories in its pages, such as Benimaru Itoh's spectacular Star Fox comic, released to coincide with the promotion and launch of the original SNES game in 1993.
