"I'm still blown away by the amount of talent": Hellblade devs Ninja Theory face closure after Microsoft fail to reach a deal with buyers

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced that they were trying to sell UK-based Hellblade creators Ninja Theory as part of their steady efforts to siphon larger, shinier doubloons from the Xbox gaming business by laying off thousands of people . Today, they are proposing to close Ninja Theory, having ultimately failed to reach an agreement with buyers, though they're still holding out hope of a happier outcome. The news comes as part of the latest round of Microsoft cuts , which have seen Xbox lay off 268 people and merge several of their best-known studios. Read more

"Good luck today, Halo friends": After years of rivalry, Call of Duty's creators have taken charge of Xbox's defining FPS series amid yet more layoffs

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Dev 'Considering' Customisation Options for Game's Huge Amount of 'On-Screen Guidance'

Open world blues. Whether we like it or not, in-game guidance systems have become a staple of modern gaming. Other times, it just comes off as a bit annoying, like when Atreus and Mimir constantly offer up puzzle hints in God of War . Read the full article on pushsquare.com

Today's changes might get Xbox a new Halo sooner, but history shows production line development makes for boring games

When I was younger, I loved Chewits. Each parcel of chewy sugar threatened to tear out a tooth, but their punch of strawberry, blackcurrent, and orange flavour was hard to resist. Left to my own devices, I would take packs of Chewits, unwrap all the sweets, and press them together in the palm of my hand until they formed a single Chewit boulder. The different colours and flavours became indistinguishable but the sheer size and density of the thing was attractive to my inner glutton. The first time I did this, I put the whole thing into my mouth and when I tried to bite down on the sweet mass my jaw became almost glued together by the sugary morass. Panicking, I tried to swallow it down and almost choked, as the formless Chewitts filled my oesophagus. Before I turned completely blue, I was able to cough it back up. I want to say I only did this once, but it took a good three or four times before I realised squashing things together, while it seems could only multiply each Chewits' amazingness, can actually make a formless mass that will choke you. So, onto Xbox's plans to consolidate their studios . Read more

Xbox Confirms Job Losses and Studio Changes, Activision to Make Next Halo Game

Halo Studios loses roles, Obsidian now under Bethesda. Microsoft has now confirmed the rumours of the next wave of job layoffs within its Xbox division, as well as important changes to its internal studio makeup. I taught an old man new tunes in rhythm-action shopkeeper sim Mr. Records, and now you can try the demo yourself

One of the bright spots of a miserably grey Summer Game Fest 2026 was Mr. Records, a mashup of rhythm-action autorunner and casual vinyl shop management by music game specialists Glee-Cheese Studio. If you’ve been paying attention to chats during any live gaming event this year, especially Sony’s State of Plays , you’ll notice a term being spammed continuously – and no, it’s not “no disc, no buy”; it’s actually “we want Destiny 3”. The Prince is (a) Blue(print): Review

How long is too long before something “gets good”? The first few episodes of a TV series? 50 pages of a novel? What about 5-10 hours of a ~30-hour game? At what point do you give up on something, not sure if it is you or it? That was my dilemma in playing the highly lauded Blue Prince, a 2025 indie puzzle “roguelite” game from developers Dogubomb. I had heard good things, and even if I don’t play much in the puzzle genre, it had some familiar mechanics (roguelite, strategy, deck drafting sort of). So I was excited to have a review copy. But it just never landed for me, never making it to something I wanted to see through. And really, I dreaded a run ending to start a new one, the opposite of what any run-based game needs. I was waiting to get over an early hump to see the game open up, but I couldn’t, or wouldn’t, make it over. Drafting a room, with red ones generally a negative, but at least the Chapel gives you a path forward. You can’t rotate the placement. (Screenshots are all from the Steam Deck.) In browsing the community a little, I found I wasn’t alone, if a clear minority. And that doesn’t make it a “bad” game by any means. More like one that didn’t hit for me, because of me (and the genre?) and its own missteps, I would say. There’s a lot that is well done, new, and intriguing in Blue Prince, that I might one day try again. Right now, though, I don’t want to walk through the random corridors of Mt. Holly, not to unravel a mystery, not to unlock more of the game, and not to see if it really gets that good. It has had my time, and I’m not getting that back.

In another fang-tastic interview from Dongled. Given its legacy in gaming, you'd be forgiven for thinking we know pretty much all there is to know about the Making Of the original NES Castlevania (known as Akumajō Dracula in Japan) by now. However, due to some fairly shoddy crediting and the general elusiveness of Konami staff from the period ( trust me, I've tried to contact pretty much everyone I could for Wireframe several years back! ), there are still some pretty large holes in our knowledge of its development, with much of the information we have learned about the game coming from secondhand accounts from those who didn't even work on the title. Nighthawks review – a series of vignettes that sometimes excel but more often falter

Nighthawks , the 1942 painting by Edward Hopper, is generally described as portraying loneliness. The four people at the diner counter are dwarfed by the empty, cold openness of the street. But the inside of the diner looks warm. One man sits apart, but the other two patrons might be a couple, their hands close. The worker seems to be watching them, perhaps thinking of somebody he’ll return to after his shift. Nighthawks, the 2026 vampire RPG, takes this same sensation, connection in the middle of isolation, and plays it much less subtly. When it works, it manages to tell sub-stories that will stick with me like the glow of a friendly building late at night. But it doesn’t always work. Read more

TGS 2026: A White Steam Controller Exists Now. You Just Can't Buy It.

I wandered into the eXtremeRate booth at the recent Tokyo Games Show 2026 expecting the usual: more remap kits, more back paddles for controllers I already own too many of. But my eyes caught something on the wall: a Steam Controller with an all-white shell on it, and honestly? My first thought was “Wait, Valve made white?” They didn’t. eXtremeRate did it themselves. And here’s the part that matters: this isn’t a faceplate sticker or some kind of half-assed cosmetic crap. It’s a complete replacement shell. Every single outer panel of the Steam Controller swapped out in one go. Same trick they’ve been pulling on the Steam Deck for years with their full-set shells, where you replace front plate, back plate and buttons as a whole kit instead of hoping your old plastic never ages or cracks. And to be honest, even though my Steam Deck always rests firmly into its case when I am not using it, it’s developed some micro-cracks and some rashes here and there, so sooner or later I may have to swap its shell if I really care about its looks. I’m guessing the same will probably happen with the Steam Controller sooner or later.

I connected with Days Gone in a way that a lot of people seemed to have connected with Ellie in the first The Last of Us. A lot of people, through journeying with Ellie, began to connect to her along with Joel, and have extremely passionate opinions on the ending because of their connection with Ellie I didn't feel that at all. Why? Well because Ellie is invulnerable in combat. I never personally felt the connection I think the game wanted me to with her, because despite everything... Read more

Will Child Link Ever Headline a 3D Zelda Again?

So obviously with the OoT remake hype swirling right now, I got to thinking: Will Nintendo ever give child Link a full blown 3D open air experience? There is just something so charming about The Minish Cap, Windwaker, Majora's Mask and the child portion on OoT. I understand that it's not as edgy, but I think it would be interesting to revisit. We've went from Twilight Princess - Skyward Sword- Breath of the Wild - Tears of the Kingdom. So it's been 20 years of adult Link in 3D Zelda.

The British-born bedroom programmer tore up the early days of the ZX Spectrum with a series of wild, compelling, and somewhat anarchic titles, games which were emboldened with working-class spirit and emblazoned with some of the weirdest, most abstract box art in the medium's history. Receiving the rarely-seen TRS-80 computer as a gift in 1979, Smith took to programming as a prodigy, coding and releasing commercial games for the TRS-80 and the VIC-20 within just a few years. "Press & hold" charge attacks that don't require an initial uncharged attack

Zelda Ocarina of Time Remake lets you charge a spin attack without having to initially swing Link's sword. You can just hold the button, and then let it go. Games like Metroid Prime and Star Fox make you shoot first before charging a shot (iirc). Same with original Ocarina of Time. What games do which? Which do you prefer, and why specifically? how does/would "negative edge" play into this?

Nintendo to release new Switch (1) + MK8D Console Bundle in October in Europe; MSRP set at far lower €219.99, with several retailers listing at €199

Not sure if they announced this anywhere yet but is listed across several retailers in Europe. Feautures the regular Switch Red/Blue with a Game Card version of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. There was a similar bundle available before but that had a digital code for MK8D. The MSRP looks set at €219.99 but I see several retailers listing it at €199.99. Should be a great affordable option this holiday season and a good... Read more

Silent Hill: Townfall review - an often inspired, if slightly lumbering trek into the fog

Once a fictional town in Maine, Silent Hill has broken containment and become a transferable oral history mechanism, offered to videogame developers worldwide as a way of investigating, even celebrating local culture. I'm still in two minds about whether this licensing outreach project, begun with Silent Hill f , is more inspired than it is vampiric. I picture Konami's invitation being pushed under the door of potential collaborators like Mary's letter to James in Silent Hill 2: "in our restless dreams, we see that town... let's touch base there sometime, expand our concepts further ." There's opportunity and peril for any studio who answers the letter: opportunity, because Silent Hill is an uncommonly rich way of thinking about the past, with its parallel realities, monster metaphors, and woozy grounding in both mysticism and psychoanalysis. And peril, because licenses have a way of engulfing licensees, forcing them into a straitjacket of tropes: fog, sirens, antagonists with geometric heads. Thankfully, Silent Hill: Townfall 's creators Screen Burn (previously No Code) haven't gotten lost in the murk, though I don't think Townfall is their finest creation, not least because it's overreliant on stealth. Like the makers of Silent Hill f, they've taken what they need from Silent Hill to tell a story of their own. Read more

Did yall want to play as Starfox out the arwings?

I remember the franchise made a big deal everytime you got to play outside the arwing. It was the final ultimate unlock in Starfox 64, Adventures Doubled down on it, and Assault tried to expand on it. However, was that something you wanted? Personally? Yes I wanted to play with em off the cockpit, but that's only because I really wanted to see them run or do things. Felt more personalized seeing your character run around vs fly around... However, thinking back, I feel like the... Read more

Review: Silent Hill: Townfall (PS5) - Dated Bite-Sized Horror... in a Good Way

Ordell's ordeal. If you were to cut the Silent Hill 2 remake by about a third, make it first-person, and set it in Scotland, you'd be most of the way to Silent Hill: Townfall . The latest game in the survival horror series is more of a traditional experience compared to last year’s Silent Hill F , returning to the sort of environments, puzzles, and gameplay you’d expect from the mainline entries. Stellar Blade Still Not Finished, Four Free Bayonetta Costumes Coming to PS5

Original game will get "some changes" for sequel. Korean dev Shift Up showed off the Switch 2 version of Stellar Blade at the Tokyo Game Show last week, which I played and previewed for Nintendo Life . (There’s a demo out now if you want to try it yourself, but the TL;DR is that it’s a decent port but a downgrade compared to the PS5 version.) Read the full article on pushsquare.com
