The current state of Retro Collections and services like NSO don't do the games they're "preserving" justice

I believe that when it comes to preserving videogames there's one aspect that goes under-discussed. Everyone (understandably, perhaps) cares mostly about the games being accessible in some form, and after that it's like the checkbox for "available in modern platforms" gets ticked off and it stops mattering. The aspect I'm talking about is input lag. As of late I've started to pay more attention to input lag in games, specifically for emulation as I feel that's one place where it's... Read more

i have a real thing for what i call "middle-poly" retro graphics

graphics that felt like a half way bridge between ps1 and ps2 graphics. SMT: nocturne is one example, though you could argue in some cases they're high poly for the time. but what is this, like a 1500 poly model? i'd consider that middle poly since in-game ps2 models could get into the range of 3k to 6k the first jak and daxter would be another example. post your favorite examples with pics

For those playing Fire Emblem Fortune’s Weave… did developers pick the ‘right’ 4 lords? **possible spoilers**

As per the Ask the Developers from earlier this week, the game was supposed to have 8 interweaving stories. However, they initially paired it back to 4, threw in Eshmel to tie the story together, and put the remaining 4 protags into sublord status. As people have been playing through the game, I've been seeing some interesting discourse, with a lot of people saying how interesting the sub lords are and whether or not it was a miss to not have... New Steam Games with Native Linux Builds, including Beetle Ball and Rogue Blight - 2026-09-09 Edition

This article is running a little late because of the Tokyo Games Show preparations that were undergoing over the past few weeks! Between 2026-09-02 and 2026-09-09 there were 83 New Steam games released with Native Linux builds. For reference, during the same time, there were 647 games released for Windows on Steam, so the Linux versions represent about 12.8 % of total released titles. You should definitely not miss Beetle Ball if you liked Rocket League, it seems to be a worthy renewal of the concept now with bugs instead of cars! Another excellent contender for your attention should be Rogue Blight which follows the formula of Slay the Spire very closely yet with a different execution. Full details below!

Nintendo Wii And Kinect Games Could Have A Second Life Thanks To This Cube-Like Console

The Sunday Papers

Sundays - well, very early Sunday mornings - are for watching a whole queue of hungry wild animals pass your kitchen window, because a neighbour has decided to leave a bollard-sized catfood dispenser outside the block entrance while they're away on holiday. I'm pretty sure the neighbour's cat wouldn't eat from the dispenser even if there wasn't a badger wedged eagerly inside it. She's an aloof and disdainful creature, who hates going near the front door because that's where those stinky humans come from. Will I try to feed the poor moggy, denied her dinner by a bunch of Farthing Wood rejects? No I will not, because I'm too busy reading articles about videogames, and things that are vaguely in the orbit of videogames. Here are a few of those articles. Look, please stop fretting about the cat. She's perfectly plump and glossy, whereas that badger looks like he hasn't had a square meal since August. Read more

Wolverine PS5 Tones Down 'Fart Trails' as Title Tipped to Be a Huge Sales Success

What are your feelings on open world racing games in relation to route/track/course design, compared to closed circuit racers?

I love an open world racer sometimes, but generally speaking when I look back on the most memorable racing game moments in my life they're mostly from closed circuit tracks on games. I think a truly great racing game track is so special, and much more difficult to deliver than most people give credit for, and that feeling is just fundamentally much more difficult to do in an open world racing game. For an open world racer, my enjoyment generally comes from the freedom of exploration, doing... Read more

Worst voice/voice acting in a realistic/grounded game

EDIT: originally there was no date, so cutoff will be from PS4/XBOne gen onward now After being reminded of the male GTAIIIIII protagonist's voice sparking discussion after the recent gameplay showcase, it made me wonder what people consider the worst voice acting within that "realistic/believable/grounded" space. The Making Of: Rare's Amazing Spider-Man - "I Hadn't Seen Or Heard Of A Game Boy Before"

How Rare's only superhero video game started Chris Sutherland's career. The recent discourse around Marvel's Wolverine on PS5 is something I've personally tried to avoid, but it serves to highlight the fact that superhero video games are some of the biggest commercial projects in the industry, generating millions in revenue and triggering pages and pages of debate online. You could argue that it's always been that way, right back to the late '70s and early 1980s, when the first examples – such as 1979's Superman (Atari 2600) and 1982's Spider-Man (Atari 2600, Odyssey 2) – appeared on the market. Even so, it's remarkable to learn that, even by the time the 1990s arrived, many of these lucrative titles were designed and developed by tiny teams, even within respected and esteemed studios like Rare . No Ladders Necessary: Famicom Crazy Climber Joins Hamster's Console Archives

Going up in the world. If you don't have a head for heights, you might wanna look away for a moment, as classic gaming purveyor Hamster has announced that the Famicom port of Crazy Climber is the newest addition to its Console Archive range. Released for the Famicom in 1986, following a successful coin-op run for the 1980 original, Nichibutsu's Crazy Climber is a simple, vertically-scrolling platformer that pushes player coordination to its limit. Gameplay sees a man attempting to scale the outside of a series of skyscrapers, avoiding falling objects, birds, and murderous residents. Our hero has seemingly no purpose for their ascension, nor the need for a safety net or lifeline. The game is not called "Sane Climber." Read the full article on timeextension.com

Single player games might require age verification if they use Steam under EU Kids Act's current draft, according to MEP's senior policy adviser

The European Commission proposed new rules around how under-15s access the likes of social media, AI chatbots, and online video games earlier this week . The draft legislation is called the EU Kids Act and calls for the setting up of a tiered system governing the types of accounts children under 15 can create to access such services, enforced by mandatory age verification for all users. The documents laying out the proposal have been officially released, and based on the current wording the Commission have used to define what they class as an online game, it seems single player games that rely on online platforms like Steam for updates, distribution, or even a one-time authentication could be caught in the crossfire. That is, unless the definition is tightened up before the law is set in stone, if it indeed it makes it that far. Read more

That's because Edia has also officially confirmed plans to rerelease the PC Engine CD-ROM² titles The Legend of Heroes 1 & 2 on modern consoles (PS5, PS4, Switch, & PC) worldwide next year, as reported by Gematsu . Pulling focus: Must AAA pander to the distracted? | Opinion

There's been a lot of talk in recent years about the effect that the inflation of development budgets has had on the industry. As budgets in the hundreds of millions of dollars have become common, cracks have emerged in the foundations of the entire model for funding new games. Attitudes to risk have been warped in strange ways under the weight of those financial expectations; a desire for the certainty of proven IP, twisted around by a reckless willingness to take huge swings at incredibly slim chances of equally huge rewards . Linux Ready With Fix For Intel's FRED Crashing Some Games Under Wine / Steam Play

Recently there have been some bug reports to Mesa around Intel Panther Lake graphics crashing with some games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Elden Ring crashing or freezing quite quickly. This turns out not to be an Intel Xe3 Arc Graphics B390 driver bug with Panther Lake but rather due to a kernel issue with the new Flexible and Return Event Delivery "FRED" that debuted with the Core Ultra Series 3 processors...

Control Resonant review: A superbly strange action-RPG that'll make you feel tiny and godly at once

Control Resonant , much like the inside-out, interdimensional cryptids it has you bashing with a shapeshifting stick, probably shouldn’t exist. At least not in the risk-averse, pennypinching reality that sometimes seems to have enveloped the art of gamesmaking, and that may have installed some scepticism into my own head . The sequel to a liked yet slow-selling shooter, which replaces both the original’s player character and its instantly recognisable, bureauca-brutalist setting, while violently pirouetting into open-world RPG melee brawling. Five words that Remedy, in all their thirty years of existence, have never previously let pass their lips. Read more

Control Resonant: How Remedy is going bigger and weirder with its paranatural horror sequel on September 24

Control was just the beginning. The paranatural realm established in Remedy Entertainment’s sci-fi action adventure thriller gets a full sequel in Control Resonant on PlayStation 5, which leaves the confines of the mysterious Oldest House and ventures into a world of terrifying entities, mind-bending cityscapes, and an unfairly incarcerated man with incredible abilities who just […]

Review: Control Resonant (PS5) - A Wildly Inventive and Drop-Dead Gorgeous Sequel

You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling. I’m fighting a possessed bus with a weapon that morphs from an axe to a whip whilst the skyscrapers of Manhattan fold in on themselves like I’m in a dream from Inception. Nowhere else could this be the case than in a Remedy game. Releasing its third entry in the Remedy Connected Universe, Control Resonant has the Finnish developer’s DNA all over it. It’s inventive, weird, gorgeous, and as far as sequels go, a pretty hefty step up from the 2019 original – although I still have my issues. Read the full article on pushsquare.com

"Golden Axe Was A Big Part Of My Childhood" - Emmy-Winning Actor & "Nostalgic Fool" Matthew Rhys Shares His Love Of "See-Ga"

The actor plays Gilius Thunderhead in the new animated adaptation. Whenever an actor is attached to a film or TV adaptation of a classic video game, the question that crosses everyone's mind is typically whether they were familiar with it prior to accepting the role. It's not a prerequisite for a good performance, of course, but it's often a comfort for fans to know there's someone on set who cares about the source material as much as they do, especially if the adaptation is taking some pretty wild swings in another direction (say, adapting a pretty straightforward fantasy hack-and-slash action game into a 20-minute-per-episode animated comedy). The PS2 Tough Nut Security Chip 'MechaCon' Has Finally Been Cracked Open

26-year-old lock finally busted. One of the last, and most steadfast, elements of PlayStation 2's infrastructure has finally been toppled, as modders have "broken wide open" the best-selling console's notoriously fortified security chip. As reported by Tom's Hardware , the CXP102064 chip - more commonly known by the pseudonym "MechaCon" - made its debut in the original PS2 model released in 2000. The chip has many roles within the console's operation, including direct control of the PS2's optical drive and the decryption of both its "MagicGate" memory card and the platform's native KELF (Kernel Executable Linkable Format) files. New Air Management '96 PS1 Fan Translation Released To Make "Insulting" GenAI Effort Obsolete

Love at first flight? Video games are amazing escapism, aren't they? One day you're exercising your destructive tendencies, running through a jungle smashing crates as a wild-eyed marsupial or wrecking some poor bloke's car as you escape from the cops; the next, you're living out one in a collection of incredibly niche job-related fantasies — from becoming the operator of your very own theme park to taking over the management of your favourite football team. Originally released in 1996 for the Sony PlayStation (and later Sega Saturn and Windows PCs), Koei's Air Management '96 definitely belongs to the latter camp, being less about pulse-raising action and more about savvy business planning, clever budgeting, and the satisfaction of a job well done. A successor to the video game Air Management for 16-bit consoles (known as Aerobiz in the West), it was available exclusively in Japan, but has now received a complete English translation (for the PS1 version), courtesy of the hacker/translator Saralene , as of yesterday. PSA: Do not pay for World of Warcraft: Forever beta access if you are outside of the US

While the World of Warcraft Forever beta is doubling as a testing ground for the new megaserver concept where all players in a region share a server but are grouped into different phases based on chosen playstyle, Blizzard neglected to mention that there are no regional servers during the beta. The beta servers are exclusively located in the US, and as a result, are completely unplayable from other regions like the EU. You can expect 600-800 MS latency most of the time, peppered with...
