Heir of the Dog gets a release date (October 29th 2026) - British Jekyll and Hyde-like point-and-click comedy adventure

There was a previous free game jam demo in 2020, Hair of the Dog, but this is essentially now a full game in 2026. They did a Kickstarter in July 2024. I have Lucy Dreaming in my library, but have sadly neglected it. So, will correct that mistake, because I could do with more British comedy in point-and-clicks.

Question passengers with tarot-like cards in Dreadline Express, a train mystery with the most intriguing conversation system I've played since Her Story

In Dreadline Express, you play a character who awakes in the cabin of a carriage on the last human train. It hurtles down the track, bathed in the red light of an alien sky. At the windows of the carriage, eldritch tentacles press themselves against the glass. A voice crackles at the speaker, it announces that you've been selected by lottery. You're to be sacrificed for the greater good. The message signs off "All hail the Supreme Engineer". It's an ominous beginning, but the best is still to come: Dreadline Express has a mechanic that quickly made it my favourite thing I played at Gamescom. Read more

1992's Ultra Gory PC-98 Horror Title Dead Of The Brain Is (Be)Heading To Steam

Rave from the Grave. The '90s horror output of controversial Japanese developer FairyTale is headed to PC, translated into English (officially) for the very first time. Published by FAKKU, the first release in FairyTale's "Nightmare Collection" will be the PC-98 title Dead Of The Brain, which gooed up the Japanese market back in 1992. Dead of the Brain: Day of the Living Dead spearheaded FairyTale's forced genre shift from erotic games (or "Eroge") to horror titles. In a story that seems almost quaint today, a high-school student stole a copy of the studio's 1991 release Saori: The House of Beautiful Girls from Japanese store shelves. You wouldn't steal an Eroge. Read the full article on timeextension.com

Star Wars Galactic Racer review: now this is frenetically fun podracing with a totally unforgiving streak

Becoming a boost junkie in arcade racers that offer such potent bursts of extra oomph is usually only a matter of time. Star Wars: Galactic Racer is no different. The hooks have been in deep. The vast majority of the builds I’ve pulled together in runs through its singleplayer campaign have lived and died in their effectiveness by the two types of boost you can cram into your landspeeder, speeder bike, or skim speeder. The first, afterburner, is less potent, but can be deployed at any time once it’s built up. The other, ramjet, is more powerful, but must be squirted out in whatever length of continuous chain you can muster without either taking your finger off the deploy button, overheating to the point your ride explodes, or running into some other obstacle which forces you back to regular speed. Both are separately upgradeable as you progress through one of the game’s rogue-lite style runs through a tourney of various Galactic League events staged across a decent variety of planetary biomes. Ubisoft Reportedly Set To Release Watch Dogs: Legion 'Director's Cut' In 2027

Will you give Legion a second chance? Watch Dogs: Legion was considered GTA in London but you could play as an old granny who at any moment could suffer a cardiac arrest and perma-die. The idea behind the game was really cool. The ability to strike up a chat with any Londoner in your path and enlist them into your gang of cyber-hackers sounded revolutionary, which made it quite the letdown when the game built around it was pretty naff. "Nintendo Didn't Swerve" - Product Growth Expert Comments On Zelda Vs. GTA 6

PS1 Obscurity Spectral Tower, Perhaps The Longest "Kusoge" Ever Made, Is Now Playable In English

Got 5,000 hours to spare? The rare and rubbish PS1 RPG Spectral Tower has been translated into English, and is now ready and raring to go for all players looking to have a tedious, endless adventure. The patch, crafted by a team of homebrewers, arrives just in time for the dubious title's 30th anniversary. Released in 1996, Spectral Tower is an RPG with roguelike sensibilities, following a party of adventurers as they attempt to climb the titular 'spectral tower' - an isolated skyreacher that, legend tells, absolves sinners of their transgressions as they climb. The higher you go, the more purified your soul becomes. There are five successively difficult towers to conquer, ranging from 10 floors to 10,000. Read the full article on timeextension.com

Preview: Nintendo Switch Sports Resort Is More Of The Same, But Better

Wuhu Island: Be there or be (Spocco) Square. Back what seems like a lifetime ago, I got a chance to have a pop at Nintendo Switch Sports Resort at gamescom '26. No, I don’t mean the stuff that just anyone with a ticket and the patience to wait in an enormous queue could play. No, I got a chance to play sports that the average Joes could only dream of, like table tennis. I played prop plane, table tennis, archery, thumb wrestling, skateboarding, bowling, and boxing, but not necessarily in that order. I believe people with the patience to tackle the game on the show floor had the chance to play power cruising (discount Wave Race to you and me), and it’s possible I had the option between that and bowling, if my memory’s correct. PlatinumGames CEO pauses a discussion on Stellar Blade's Bayonetta costume crossover to casually imply more Bayonetta may be on the way

It's been a bit since Bayonetta has had any time in the spotlight. 2022's Bayonetta 3 released to pretty good reception (although did earn ire for its depiction of the witch herself), but all's been quiet on the Umbral front since. With creator Hideki Kamiya having left PlatinumGames in 2023, it seemed even more unlikely for the series to continue. A ray of hope appeared in an unexpected place, though: Stellar Blade. That game's Switch 2 port, due for release next month, will feature four new costumes based on characters from the Bayonetta series, demonstrating that Platinum are willing to do something with it (well, that and letting her be added to Sonic Racing: Crossworlds alongside Minecraft Steve and Spongebob.) The colourful image was painted by Wil Overton, the veteran artist known for their work with developer Rare as well as their legendary, anime-infused covers for '90s magazine Super Play. Released digitally for Game Boy Color (playable via emulators and flash carts), Cave Dave is a tricky platformer in the vein of titles such as Spelunker (1983) and, by default, Spelunky (2008). Car Park Capital's cities are utopias of public transport networks and green living, or they were before I got done with them

The streets of Baldtown City are nearly empty of traffic. It's not that it's a ghost town: up and down the pavements there are crowds of citizens bustling to and from work. They pile into subways, queue up at bus stops, and enter and leave the town by a regularly-running intercity metro service. Their city is woven with affordable, clean, public transport. As a representative of big auto, whose one joy in life is bringing people the freedom of car dependency, Baldtown city will have to change. Car Park Capital is a management game that looks to be straight out of the 90s, born from the same Bullfrog sensibilities that gave us Theme Park and Theme Hospital. Mini Review: KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind (DLC) - A Fair Switch 2 Port Of An Enjoyable 'Conclusion'

The end of the beginning. There was a lot of hype and excitement in the lead-up to 2019's Kingdom Hearts 3. It promised to finally conclude the Dark Seeker Saga that had kicked off way back on the PS2 in 2002. Expectations were sky-high and the final product didn't quite stick the landing, but it did manage to deliver plenty of that sincere Kingdom Hearts magic that kept us invested since the beginning. Now that it's finally come to Switch 2 with a proper native port — no Cloud Versions here — I'm pleased to report that it was largely worth the wait. Narratively, this adventure is very bizarrely paced, with a lot of meaningless detours into unrelated and largely irrelevant Disney stories before a sudden lightspeed attempt to resolve all the major subplots. The story is thus unsatisfying and not really given the necessary time to breathe, yet it’s also something that you can’t help but love despite it all. Sora’s earnest optimism, the frequent goofy monologues on the power of friendship, and the shoehorned ways in which the party is inserted into known Disney stories somehow all come together in an incredibly charming and pleasant way, making it feel like a worthwhile journey despite shortcomings. Retro platformer series Dizzy is back for a new game from its original creators, who are really happy for you to know it's made with AI

For British people who were actively playing games in the late 80s and/or retro enthusiasts looking back at that period of the industry, the name Dizzy might ring a bell (it doesn’t for me, but what can I tell you, I’m 24). A prolific platformer series starring a bipedal egg, it spanned formats from the ZX Spectrum to the NES and Game Gear, and managed sixteen(!?) releases between 1987 and 1992 - before slowing significantly past the millenium. Still, that hasn’t stopped its creators, the Oliver Twins, from trying to bring it back in the current era, and so came the announcement of another new Dizzy game during their talk at last weekend’s Play Expo in Blackpool. After 12 years, Ultra Street Fighter IV gets not one, but two connection-stabilising rollback netcode mods aaaand they're both made using Claude

Street Fighter IV, the game that basically revived the fighting game genre back in 2009 and gave birth (not literally) to a new subset of players lovingly referred to as ‘09ers’, saw its final iteration in 2014’s Ultra Street Fighter IV. While it wasn’t the most perfectly balanced game, it’s remembered fondly by its players and is viewed by many as the last vestige of ‘honest Street Fighter’. It’s also burdened with being limited to delay-based netcode rather than the more modern and more stable rollback netcode, but this is something modders are attempting to fix. Using genAI. Sorry if I got your hopes up. To quickly explain why the different netcode matters, delay-based netcode handles latency issues by variably delaying inputs to match unstable connection, while rollback netcode removes this delay by accepting inputs immediately and then reversing the game state (rolling back) if the connection instability causes inconsistency between players. All of this to say, rollback has become the industry standard for its stability since the mid 2010s, leaving delay-based to rot in input-eating hell. Read more

DOOM On Vectrex Brings An Eerie Vector Beauty To The Legendary DOS Shooter

Grab your plastic overlays. Milton Bradley's tabletop all-in-one console, Vectrex, can now be inked in as another platform that can "run" seminal 1993 release DOOM. New footage surfaced yesterday that showed the granddaddy of the shooter genre "running" on the long-obsolete vector-based system. Even given the Vectrex display's rudimentary visuals, id Software's legendary FPS title is instantly recognisable, with its sci-fi futurist depiction of Hell on Earth beautifully transformed into smooth vector visuals. Vectrex DOOM is at once delightful and creepy, and depicts a future of gaming that might've happened, had the vector stylings of titles such as Tempest (1981), Star Wars (1983), and Battlezone (1980) become an industry norm. "I Know That Was a Half-Baked Take" - Street Fighter II Artist Is Still Annoyed He Didn't Do the Cover Art for the West

"In North America, Japanese art styles like that just won't be accepted". Given the insane global popularity of Japanese animation and pop culture today, it's hard to believe that, once upon a time, Western marketers did everything they could to hide the fact that something came from The Land of the Rising Sun. There's no better example of this than video games; in the '80s and early '90s, it was common to see Japanese games localised in North America and Europe with new box artwork, penned by regional artists in an attempt to cater for the (supposed) needs of players in that part of the world. Noematica is a lucid dreamer's "n-dimensional" take on The Sims that proudly boasts it will never ever gouge you for DLC

Over the course of my illustrious tenure as RPS news mangler, I have seen many Simslikes. Tragically cancelled Simslikes from publishers better known for feats of tactical incest! Corrosively telegenic Simslikes suggestive of a paved-over burial ground! Cottagecore "don't call me a Simslike" Simslikes! And now, finally, Simslikes that appear to have been conceived in the Red Room from Twin Peaks. The game I'm referring to is Noematica: Digital Dollhouse from Asphodel Cybernetics, which exhorts you to "behold the humble Noem! Beguiling and silly-pilled, fully customizable, monstrous or adorable: with an n-dimensional vector space of fantasies and memories." Here's a trailer - get beholding. Read more

"I Wanted To Challenge Myself" - Former WarioWare Director Talks Life After Nintendo

Wario Where? Earlier this year, Nintendo veteran and WarioWare legend Goro Abe announced that he was leaving the company and taking up a teaching post at the Osaka Electro-Communication University. Roughly seven months on, VGC got the chance to chat with the dev about his post-Nintendo life, and, rather expectedly, games are still very much on his mind. “Making games takes a lot of time, and I knew that based on my age and career that I could not make that many more games in the future,” Abe told VGC. “And I wanted to challenge myself to do other stuff. So I thought it would be interesting to do things that I had never done before, and that’s why I decided to go into teaching.” Read the full article on nintendolife.com

RetroAchievements Come To Original Hardware Thanks To This PS2 Software Plug-In

xeRAbora brings RetroAchievements to modded hardware for the first time. New homebrew software allows for RetroAchievements to be tracked and recorded from games played on original PS2 hardware, rather than through an emulator. Developed by modder "hacan 359", the xeRAbora program works in collaboration with another homebrew utility, Open PS2 Loader, to track player progress on natively played PS2 games. As noted by RetroDodo, xeRAbora, downloadable right here, plugs into the Open PS2 Loader program and essentially tracks your PS2 gameplay from your PC as you play, reading the console's memory and watching for flags that denote achievements being hit. The player's Retro Achievement account is then notified and updated accordingly. It also works in line with standard PS2 emulation, for those who prefer the One Box method. Claims that genAI speeds up PC ports of classic games are either "false" or missing the point, says Banjo Kazooie: Recompiled developer

The software developer behind an unofficial PC version of N64 platformer Banjo-Kazooie has posted an impassioned screed about the usage of generative AI tools for rush-job PC ports of classic games. The dev in question is DarioSamo, a member of the modder group who released Banjo: Recompiled earlier this year. He argues that the idea that generative AI allows for faster porting is either outright "false" or simply misguided, explaining that decompiling a game – that is turning the original machine code into human-readable code – in order to release on modern platforms is supposed to be an exercise in actually understanding and preserving how that game was made. "This is an incredible time to be alive for a creator". Over the weekend of 3-4 October 2026, I attended the Play Expo in Blackpool. It was a 5-and-a-half-hour drive with Paul Drury; we attended to mark the launch of Drury's new book, The Arcade 1979-2000, and fellow book contributors Martyn Carroll and Frank Gasking also attended. The expo featured a large market room (with even larger prices), a gargantuan gaming hall filled with arcade machines, networked computers, consoles of every sort, a row of pinball machines, and a stage for performances. There were also high-score tournaments throughout. These aspects alone would have made it worth attending, and organiser Andy Brown said they'd enjoyed their best footfall in the history of Play Expo. Read the full article on timeextension.com

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is something far worse than war. Auroch Digital's Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 launches next week, and I've been chatting to the game's principal designer Matt Bone about some of the more "creative" environments in store. Mini Review: KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue (Switch 2)

A bit of a sleeper. In the lead-up to Kingdom Hearts 3, Square Enix needed some fresh content to rebuild interest in the franchise after it had been dormant for years outside of mobile games. After porting over the collections of most of the earlier games to more modern platforms, the company then decided to squeeze out one last collection to hoover up the stragglers into one package. Dubbed Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, the value proposition on this one is undeniably lesser, but there’s still plenty to love about it. The core of this release is Kingdom Hearts 3D, the 3DS spinoff that acted as the first chronological sequel to Kingdom Hearts 2 and the prelude to the series finale. Here, you play as both Sora and Riku in a tag-team sort of adventure where the two are given the shared assignment of awakening various Sleeping Worlds to complete the Mark of Mastery exam and officially step up as Keyblade Masters. There is no escape, cheese-filching squeakmonsters! Down you go! Down you go into the Maw! If you think characterising new videogames as a rodent infestation is unkind, I quite agree. Rats are sociable, adaptable, and admirable creatures who deserve better than to be compared to stupid videogames. "We opted out of some things really early on": How the small team making No Law plan to make it look as big as Cyberpunk 2077

If you've watched the trailers for No Law or the tech demo that developer Neon Giant showed off at Unreal Fest earlier this year, it would be easy to believe the game has a similar scope to CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077. Set in a beautifully realised mediterranean city that is somehow equal parts Lisbon and Kowloon Walled City – and with corner shops that are as stuffed with riches as the one down the road from my flat. But, the developers will happily tell you where they've scrimped and saved. Read more

Feature: Let's Flick Through Sammy's Photos from Gamescom and Tokyo Game Show

Nothing too unsavoury, I promise. I’ve been wanting to share some of my adventures from Gamescom and Tokyo Game Show for weeks now, but I wasn’t really sure how best to package it. Then, earlier this week while I was out running, I realised I didn’t really need a big overarching theme or some inspirational message – what if I just posted the best bits in a big fat gallery-style article, with anecdotes? OpenCourant: Rocky Linux Developers Create Community Fork Of OpenRadioss

This week was the surprising and unfortunate decision of Siemens shutting down the OpenRadioss project as the four year old open-source project started by Altair Engineering with their prominent Radioss finite element solver. Siemens didn't just end the project but they shutdown the GitHub repository that hosted the open-source code and removed other resources that had built around it. Fortunately, there's a new community fork of OpenRadioss as OpenCourant...

Older AMD GPUs Get a Second Life in Linux's amdgpu Driver

Timur Kristof is a open-source graphics developer and electrical engineer working as a subcontractor for Valve. He used to work on SailfishOS (Jolla), before starting his work on several parts of Mesa, the open graphics drivers stack on Linux. He used his XDC 2026 talk, streamed by the X.Org Foundation on September 30, 2026, to report that decade-old AMD graphics cards now run cleanly on the modern amdgpu driver. The work closed long-standing gaps in display output, video encode and decode, and crash recovery across the GCN generations.

Feature: Five Things I'm Absolutely Loving About Star Wars: Galactic Racer On Xbox Series X

This is where the fun begins. One of the Xbox games that I've been most anticipating over the past few months is Star Wars: Galactic Racer - the first ever release from UK studio Fuse Games. All of the trailers and preview footage have made it look like a dream for fans of Star Wars Episode 1 Racer, and I'm certainly someone who falls into that category. So, you better believe I was knocking on the door of the PR team for this game, desperately trying to get my hands on a pre-release review code! It ended up falling into my hands a little later than hoped, hence why we haven't published a full review yet, but I at least wanted to share some of my early impressions ahead of launch. Just be aware that these are only based on a few initial hours with the campaign, and it's still very early days for me. Read the full article on purexbox.com

Review: Minecraft Dungeons II (Switch 2) - A Fun But Flawed Dungeon-Crawling Sequel With Great Co-Op

Creepers, Skellies, oh my. A traditional adventure format seems an ill fit for something as freeform as Minecraft. The Markus 'Notch' Persson-created global phenomenon is an experience built on creativity with endless scope for experimentation, so constricting it within the boundaries of genre seems misguided. That said, the franchise has enough cultural pull that it drove audiences to brandish wild animals in movie theatres, so there is clear versatility in this IP. Minecraft Dungeons spun off from the main game in 2020 as a Diablo-like dungeon crawler brimming with character-building potential and co-operative fun for all ages. It boasts the polygonal art style and iconography beloved by fans, presenting a simple yet satisfying loot-based RPG experience. The sequel expands on this formula further by moving from episodic progression to open-world exploration and adding more depth to the basic combat and traversal loop. The Making Of: The Elder Scrolls II - Daggerfall - "The Next Thing I Know, I'm Building One Of The Largest Procedurally Generated Games Ever"

We take a look at the history of Bethesda's groundbreaking, yet flawed, RPG classic. The Elder Scrolls is arguably one of the most successful and recognisable video game franchises of all time, sitting alongside other industry juggernauts such as Grand Theft Auto, Fallout, and Red Dead Redemption. But it wasn't always this way. Back when the series first began with The Elder Scrolls: Arena, there were some within the industry (including friends of the studio at the Wizardry developer Sir-Tech) who saw the concept of Bethesda making an RPG as a huge potential risk, doubting that the Maryland-based developer (whose previous credits at the time included Wayne Gretzky Hockey and various Terminator games for PC) had the necessary skills and experience to pull it off. Feature: We've Finally Played Xbox's New Fable Reboot, And Here's What We Think So Far

We went hands on at the recent Xbox FanFest. This year has actually been amazing for Xbox first-party releases, with all of Forza Horizon 6, Halo: Campaign Evolved and Gears of War: E-Day knocking it out of the park in my opinion, but there's one first-party game that I've been looking forward to in particular, and that's the Playground Games reboot of Fable. So, imagine my surprise when it was declared at the Xbox FanFest in London last week that Fable was actually playable! We immediately booked in a slot (which was a good job, because it was seemingly the most popular title at the show), and settled down for around 15 minutes with a specifically combat-focused part of the game. "I Needed Someone Legendary With A True Passion For It" - Remembering Robin Williams' Iconic Legend Of Zelda Ocarina Of Time Ads

"It’s still one of my favourite career moments to this day". Following the publication of our interview with Julien Seri on Tuesday 15th September, 2026, we were also able to get in touch with Gabriel Moszkowski, the person at Nintendo of Europe who came up with the concept for the ad campaign. We've, therefore, updated the following article with Moszkowski's comments. "easy to recommend". Digital Foundry has delivered its tech verdict for The Witcher 3 Remastered; a game that, for many, will be a completely free upgrade if you owned the original Switch release. Obviously, the difference in quality between Switch 1 and 2 is staggering, despite DF calling the original release one of the "most impressive feats" on Nintendo's hardware. Image quality is the highlight, with docked mode featuring dynamic resolution between 540p and 1080p, with DLSS outputting to a 1080p target. Read the full article on nintendolife.com
