Interview: "It Was A Match Made In Heaven" - Ghostbusters: Special Edition ROM Hacker On Giving The Sega Mega Drive / Genesis Title A Better Afterlife

Time Extension

"It is still wild to think that we made all of this together across different continents". If you've been reading Time Extension for a while, you've probably seen us cover some of BillyTime!Games' ROM hacks before. Over the last decade, the self-described "retro gaming mad scientist" has lent his hacking skills to a number of fascinating projects: everything from providing optional ways to play some of your favourite (and least favourite) classic games to even creating an offline recreation of Sega Channel (Sega, TCI, and Time Warner's discontinued cable video game service). Japan-Only Famicom Adventure Ripple Island Brings Fairy Tale Whimsy To The Console Archives

Time Extension

Already available elsewhere in English. The Console Archives is an excellent idea, and no doubt Hamster deserves its success for consistent vintage releases, week-on-week, year-on-year. But sometimes you have to wonder what's going on with the decision-makers - given the increasingly unappealing releases. Submitted for your approval: Sunsoft's picture-book adventure title Ripple Island, first released for the Famicom in 1988. This icon-driven adventure sees a brave young adventurer, Kyle, embark on a quest to rescue the proverbial beautiful Princess Nasarell from a foreboding castle, where she is held by the tyrant Emperor Groaker. Tyger, Tyger, Bleeding Bright. Team17 has lifted the lid on a retro-infused roguelike which will offer up both highly challenging platformer gameplay and bucketfuls of (surprisingly unnerving) gore. Inspired by William Blake's 1794 poem "The Tyger", Little Prince Tyger tells the grim tale of a royal hunter - tasked by the Queen to locate her lost son, Prince Galaad - picking their way through a frightening dark fantasy environment, populated by nightmarish creatures and even scarier memories. Poll: Have You Ever Imported A Video Game?

Time Extension

It's an import-ant question. Social media is, for me, an utterly fascinating tool because it not only brings like-minded people together to share their passion for certain topics, but also exposes you to individuals who, for one reason or another, seem to have lived a very different reality from your own. The topic I found myself embroiled in this week was importing video games, something that has been a huge part of my own experience with interactive entertainment. Times Square Decked Out With 'Life-Size Street Fighter Arcade' To Promote Upcoming Movie

Time Extension

Ryu and crew hit the big screen October 16. We are one week away from the release of the energetic, highly stylised, and somewhat dubious-looking movie Street Fighter, adapted from Capcom's legendary fighting game franchise. To promote the film's October 16 release, producers Paramount and Legendary outfitted New York's Times Square with a life-size "Street Fighter Arcade", complete with its own World Warriors. In video captured by entertained/bewildered onlookers, we can see two performers - portraying SF poster boys Ryu and Ken - throwing down "on-screen", surrounded by an enormous cabinet mockup complete with a giant-sized control panel. Imagine the bill from Sanwa on that one. The Times Square cabinet only supports two buttons, as opposed to Street Fighter's six - so good luck pianoing your Hundred Hand Slap. Review: Evercade Nexus - a Commendable Upgrade, but Bundling Banjo-Kazooie Is the True Masterstroke

Time Extension

Evercade's next evolution is here. While the Evercade family has seen several hardware revisions and evolutions over the years – including a bartop arcade unit, a home console, and even a scaled-down Super Pocket sibling – the Evercade Nexus feels like the most significant step forward the brand has taken since its inception six years ago. And it's easy to see why: the introduction of dual analogue sticks opens up a whole world of possibilities, not just within the existing Evercade catalogue (many games already support such an interface thanks to the fact that you can plug in third-party pads on the Evercade VS) but also in the future. There's a wealth of 'Dual Shock'-enabled PS1 games which could potentially be licensed for the platform, for example. Read the full article on timeextension.com

Feature: "It's Insulting & Hurtful" - Beetle Adventure Racing Decomp Dev Kicks Back Against The Rise Of AI Recomps

Time Extension

"Any ethical hacker would recognise, 'Oh, this is some guy's project'". One of the most exciting developments in the retro gaming scene over the last few years is the rise of recompilation projects, offering players a new way to experience some of their favourite games on modern PC platforms. However, as the number of AI recompilations of classic games grows daily, many in the gaming community have been pushing back against this controversial technology and the promotion of projects that rely heavily on GenAI code, arguing that it is "hurting the scene". Dariosamo, for instance, one of the developers of Banjo Kazooie Recompiled (an unofficial PC port of Banjo Kazooie), recently took to social media to criticise the YouTuber VideoGameEsoterica for featuring news about an AI recomp of Banjo Tooie on his YouTube channel. 1992's Ultra Gory PC-98 Horror Title Dead Of The Brain Is (Be)Heading To Steam

Rave from the Grave. The '90s horror output of controversial Japanese developer FairyTale is headed to PC, translated into English (officially) for the very first time. Published by FAKKU, the first release in FairyTale's "Nightmare Collection" will be the PC-98 title Dead Of The Brain, which gooed up the Japanese market back in 1992. Dead of the Brain: Day of the Living Dead spearheaded FairyTale's forced genre shift from erotic games (or "Eroge") to horror titles. DOOM On Vectrex Brings An Eerie Vector Beauty To The Legendary DOS Shooter

Time Extension

Grab your plastic overlays. Milton Bradley's tabletop all-in-one console, Vectrex, can now be inked in as another platform that can "run" seminal 1993 release DOOM. New footage surfaced yesterday that showed the granddaddy of the shooter genre "running" on the long-obsolete vector-based system. Even given the Vectrex display's rudimentary visuals, id Software's legendary FPS title is instantly recognisable, with its sci-fi futurist depiction of Hell on Earth beautifully transformed into smooth vector visuals. Vectrex DOOM is at once delightful and creepy, and depicts a future of gaming that might've happened, had the vector stylings of titles such as Tempest (1981), Star Wars (1983), and Battlezone (1980) become an industry norm. "I Know That Was a Half-Baked Take" - Street Fighter II Artist Is Still Annoyed He Didn't Do the Cover Art for the West

Time Extension

"In North America, Japanese art styles like that just won't be accepted". Given the insane global popularity of Japanese animation and pop culture today, it's hard to believe that, once upon a time, Western marketers did everything they could to hide the fact that something came from The Land of the Rising Sun. There's no better example of this than video games; in the '80s and early '90s, it was common to see Japanese games localised in North America and Europe with new box artwork, penned by regional artists in an attempt to cater for the (supposed) needs of players in that part of the world. RetroAchievements Come To Original Hardware Thanks To This PS2 Software Plug-In

Time Extension

xeRAbora brings RetroAchievements to modded hardware for the first time. New homebrew software allows for RetroAchievements to be tracked and recorded from games played on original PS2 hardware, rather than through an emulator. Developed by modder "hacan 359", the xeRAbora program works in collaboration with another homebrew utility, Open PS2 Loader, to track player progress on natively played PS2 games. As noted by RetroDodo, xeRAbora, downloadable right here, plugs into the Open PS2 Loader program and essentially tracks your PS2 gameplay from your PC as you play, reading the console's memory and watching for flags that denote achievements being hit. The player's Retro Achievement account is then notified and updated accordingly. It also works in line with standard PS2 emulation, for those who prefer the One Box method. Well, it’s at least ambitious. Read the full article on timeextension.com
