Gaming's Michelin Star

ResetEra Gaming Forum

Inspired by some post I just saw on Reddit, what would video games' Michelin Star look like? Putting aside the fact it came from the Michelin Guide, a tour book to inspire people to drive around and use up their tires faster, the Michelin Star is still considered a mark of high quality. Or maybe don't put that aside; was Nintendo Power the Michelin Guide of the 90s, at least for Nintendo products? Could something similar exist in different circles or console ecosystems? Feature: "It's Insulting & Hurtful" - Beetle Adventure Racing Decomp Dev Kicks Back Against The Rise Of AI Recomps

Time Extension

"Any ethical hacker would recognise, 'Oh, this is some guy's project'". One of the most exciting developments in the retro gaming scene over the last few years is the rise of recompilation projects, offering players a new way to experience some of their favourite games on modern PC platforms. However, as the number of AI recompilations of classic games grows daily, many in the gaming community have been pushing back against this controversial technology and the promotion of projects that rely heavily on GenAI code, arguing that it is "hurting the scene". Dariosamo, for instance, one of the developers of Banjo Kazooie Recompiled (an unofficial PC port of Banjo Kazooie), recently took to social media to criticise the YouTuber VideoGameEsoterica for featuring news about an AI recomp of Banjo Tooie on his YouTube channel. Opinion: Elden Ring Is One Of My Favourite Games That I've Hardly Played

Nintendo Life

Going out on a Limgrave. I have started a new Elden Ring save file on four separate occasions now, and I have absolutely adored my time with each of them. And yet, despite putting 15-20 hours minimum into each new load, my current Switch 2 playthrough is the first time that I've managed to push through the 'tutorial area'. I need to do some explaining here, because if you have never ventured into the Lands Between, then three save files and 60+ hours spent in a tutorial sounds insane. However, in the grand scheme of things, it's not that bad. Read the full article on nintendolife.com

Lynchian noir mystery Silver Pines takes the best bits from horror, the middling bits from Metroidvanias, and the worst bits from adventure games

Rock Paper Shotgun

I want, and not even especially deep down, to like Silver Pines more than I do. Wych Elm’s debut game – a Twin Peaks-inspired, neo-noir detective mystery that quickly repaints itself in survival horror red – is endearingly unusual, an angular mishmash of different genre staples that, nonetheless, stays coherently glued together by its expressively moody visual style and an intriguing missing-person tale. It’s just... well, put it this way. I’m only about three hours in, and if I have to backtrack my slouching private dick through one more thicket of locked doors and collection puzzles, the next crime he’ll be investigating will be the aggravated assault of a desktop monitor. "It changes the notion of safety for the enemies, but also for you": Rainbow Six Tactics' destruction undoes the classic dynamics of flanking

Rock Paper Shotgun

During the hands-off presentation of Rainbow Six Tactics at Gamescom, destruction obviously featured. Walls were breached, cover was blown up, and masonry was peppered with rounds. It looked excellent, but it was also familiar from other turn-based tactical games. Considering the focus of scenery destruction in Rainbow Six Siege, I wasn't sure how the team were actually advancing the tech beyond what we've seen in games like XCOM 2. There was one moment in the hands-off demo in particular that had me worried it was basically a graphical nicety. Sniper Glaz fired a high-powered round through two interior walls, headshotting a terrorist on the other side. The round left visible holes in the walls, but beyond being a neat bit of set redressing, it wasn't anything that we couldn't have seen in other turn-based tactical games. When I spoke to the developers, I wanted to know if there was anything else happening that I wasn't perceiving, something about the destruction that made it distinctly Siege-inspired. Read more

Review: Order Of The Sinking Star (Switch 2) - Intense, Sometimes Gruelling, But Always Inventive

What a puzzler. Order of the Sinking Star is not for the weak-willed. My many hours spent staring at these puzzle boards with steam blowing out of my ears and veins popping out of my forehead made for a sometimes painful experience, but one that left me appreciating the genius of the game’s design. The opening seconds are mysterious and intriguing enough to propel you through the game’s brain teasers. Rather than meeting an NPC that tediously explains exactly what’s going on, we’re put in the shoes of our unnamed protagonist who is trying to make sense of the world they have seemingly just spawned into. They call out for their friends to no avail, wondering if they have stumbled into the afterlife. Read the full article on nintendolife.com

"Your body is foreign territory": Small-town mystery puzzler Patience is a Virtue explores power and vulnerability by way of a unique conversation system

The English language can be a way of communicating, and it can be a way of subjugating. Patience is a Virtue protagonist Louis knows this intimately. In this "cozy-meets-creepy" conversation puzzle game from teaisfortoby!, some interactions require you to answer only using the words spoken by the other party. The first such chat in the demo is with Louis's boss at the local grocery store. She wants him to lock up early. All Louis has to do is assent. But to assent, he must reassemble her phrasing into a coherent, five-word response, grappling not just with elementary grammar but phantom questions of tone. Being the first of these puzzles, it's an easier one, but the constraint is rather suffocating nonetheless. Louis is chronically ill and neurodivergent, and his difficulty talking back reflects his lack of privilege. These words don't belong to him. New XGP titles confirmed for next month. There's still plenty of October time to pass us by, but as always, we're keeping an eye on the horizon at what's to come. It's easy to be distracted by this month's killer Xbox Game Pass offering, but we've got two new additions to November's lineup to share with you. Yep, today's highlight is Titanic Escape Simulator, mostly because it's such an oddity. Personally, I don't know much about the game other than (sorry for the spoiler) the boat sinks a bit. My hope would be the devs somehow licensed Billy Zane to make a cameo. I'd like to see him shouting about coats and diamonds. Looking to hop into some 2D Metroid fan games/rom hacks. What are the best ones?

I'm interested in playing games that have that "almost" official release level of quality, design and effort put into them. 2D Metroid I vastly prefer over 3D so I wanna tackle some games that are widely considered to be solid offerings. I'm already aware of AM2R (and have it) What would you guys recommend? Asking for complete offerings only, would rather avoid playing demos or games that aren't done.

NVIDIA Vera HPC Performance Benchmarks Take On AMD EPYC, Intel Xeon

While most everyone understandably likes to talk about AI these days, one of the areas of NVIDIA's Vera CPU I have been most eager to test has been for conventional high performance computing (HPC) workloads. HPC was talked up as one of Vera's strengths thanks to its 1.2TB/s LPDDR5x memory bandwidth and custom Olympus cores. Vera is seeing deployments at HPC labs like Los Alamos. With recently having unfettered remote access to a dual NVIDIA Vera server, I ran through a variety of HPC workloads and similar performance benchmarks. Here is a look at how NVIDIA Vera performs against AMD EPYC and Intel Xeon, including with CPU power and frequency metrics.

Sonic Team's Takashi Iizuka dismisses the apparent inevitability of remakes, saying "you’re essentially providing the same experience again"

Rock Paper Shotgun

At this point, you can't even open the Steam front page without stumbling over remake after remake (sometimes remasters, just to spice things up). To say remakes are in vogue would be an understatement: they're an almost guaranteed moneymaker that can prey on nostalgia and a lust for a 'better time' to deliver games that can offer some ephemeral reproduction of the feeling of childhood, thus protecting from the Scaries of living in the current time. And, unless you're Square Enix having the Final Fantasy VII Remake series juggle both a new story and the original as a metanarrative, remakes usually grant that sweetest of temptations: the same thing you like, forever. However, one person who seemingly takes issue with this is Takashi Iizuka, general producer of the Sonic series. In an interview with Automaton - which also touches on Sonic’s growing multimedia empire and Sega’s experience with Sonic Racing: Crossworlds as their first live service game - Iizuka suggests the blue hedgehog won’t be getting any remakes or remasters anytime soon, citing the concepts' lack of originality and still-high development costs.
